GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs preventive maintenance and semi-skilled repair work on light duty, medium duty, and heavy duty vehicles and equipment on behalf of the City’s Fleet Services Division. This position provides assistance to other mechanics where needed and also works alone when the need requires;  prepares and maintains maintenance records; conducts State of Texas vehicle safety inspections; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities.

 

Operates Fleet software system, MS Excel, MS Word, other city provided software, copiers, telephones, mechanical lifts, hoists, tire changer and balancer, jacks, welding and cutting equipment, air powered tools, electric tools, and hand tools, facility doors, presses, brake lathes, pumps, bead blaster, parts cleaners, fans, pressure washer, vacuum, diagnostic instruments, and any other tool or mechanism typically found in a repair facility.

 

Inspects, operates, tests, and repairs city owned light duty, medium duty, and heavy duty vehicles and equipment for safe and proper operation.

 

Repairs and maintains various types of City vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, emergency vehicles, fire apparatus, public works and parks equipment.

 

Performs preventative maintenance necessary to ensure the proper functioning of vehicles, mechanical systems, and component parts.

 

Performs mechanical work; repairs or replaces water/fuel pumps, radiators, alternators,  belts, hoses, fuses, valves, batteries, wheels, tires, or any other component as required.

 

Responds to service calls for assistance; retrieves or repairs vehicles and equipment in the field when needed.

 

Prepares, updates, and maintains maintenance records and documentation.

 

Researches and obtains approved parts used to conduct preventive maintenance or repairs.

 

Cleans and maintains all shop facilities and equipment including restrooms, breakrooms, offices, parking area, fence line, etc., as directed.

 

Performs other duties as assigned and may be temporarily required to assist other divisions with any task if so directed.

Changes and repairs all sizes of tires or tubes as needed

 

Transports vehicles, equipment, and parts to various locations for a variety of purposes.

 

Install/remove accessories for City vehicles and equipment

 

Wash, clean, and detail vehicles and equipment

 

Performs after hours on-call duties, one full week intervals, and performs emergency field service and repairs for vehicles and equipment whenever and wherever needed.

Performs any other duties as assigned and may be temporarily required to assist other divisions with any task if so directed.

 

 

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED equivalent
Graduate of a state certified vocational institution in the auto or diesel vocation preferred
One year experience in a fleet repair environment.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of computers and their components.
Knowledge of basic automotive mechanics, gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps, valves, generators, welding, etc.
Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in vehicle and equipment maintenance.
Knowledge of the principles, practices and regulations governing the maintenance of an organization’s fleet.
Knowledge of vehicles and equipment related to municipal operations.
Ability to maintain records, reports, and documentation.
Ability to conduct a variety of semi-skilled and skilled mechanics duties.
Ability to diagnose and repair various types of mechanical issues.
Ability to follow safety guidelines with regards to tools and equipment
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff, City departments, and vendors
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid state drivers license.
Own or possess an adequate amount of tools to perform maintenance and repairs
Obtain ASE General Knowledge Certification within one (1) year of hire date.
Obtain Texas State Vehicle Inspection Certification within six (6) months.

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motorized vehicles and equipment for mechanical testing purposes, power tools, hand tools, and other equipment for mechanical system work; mechanic’s tools, including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and all other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles and equipment; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment, computers, phone, mobile, and portable radio.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to seventy-five (75) pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move weights up to one hundred fifty (150) pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
